Meet M.A.R.T.Y.

Stanford University has taken the Delorean back to the future with the Multiple Actuator Research Test-bed for Yaw (MARTY). The car is fully autonomous and spins itself around the tarmac.

The team has heavily modified the original Delorean; they’ve added a new steering system, a roll cage, coil springs, an electric drive train, and an array of GPS sensors.

MARTY is used to test autonomous car behavior in extreme situations.

“We think automated vehicles should be able to execute any maneuver within the physical limits of the vehicle to get out of harm’s way.” -Chris Gerdes, mechanical engineering professor at Stanford

Researchers hope to develop new methods and parameters for self-driving cars to perform even in the most demanding situations.
