Believe It or Not, you can actually thank plumbers for the brilliant green hue given to the Chicago River every year!

A while back, local Chicago plumbers figured out that a common orange dye they used would change color to a brilliant green in the Chicago River’s water. They convinced city officials to let them dye the whole river green during the most green of Holidays, St. Patricks day!

The original formula has since been replaced with a non-polluting and harmless vegetable dye that the city has deemed a secret recipe.

Now every year the Plumbers Local union dyes the river with 40-100 pounds of powder vegetable dye. The green color lasts for days and in that time boats, kayakers, and other vessels celebrate St. Patricks day on the water!
